No. 5 Indiana survived a determined second-half comeback from Northwestern on Friday night, holding on for a 29–23 victory at Merchants Bank Field at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington.
The win moved the defending national champions to 4–0 overall and 1–0 in Big Ten play, while Northwestern fell to 2–1 and 0–1 in the conference.
For much of the first half, Indiana appeared to be in control. Then the game changed after halftime. Northwestern scored 13 points in the third quarter and kept the pressure on into the fourth, forcing the Hoosiers to make several big plays late to secure the win.
Indiana controlled the first half
Northwestern opened the game with a goal-line stand, but its first offensive possession quickly turned into a disaster.
Quarterback Aidan Chiles fumbled the snap in the end zone, and Indiana's Daniel Ndukwe was credited with the tackle for a safety. Indiana had its first two points of the night.
The Hoosiers added a field goal from Nico Radicic before Josh Hoover found Nick Marsh for an eight-yard touchdown late in the second quarter.
That touchdown capped a 90-yard Indiana drive and put the Hoosiers ahead 12–0 with just over five minutes left in the half.
Indiana's defense was equally important during those opening 30 minutes. Northwestern managed only 51 total yards and minus-5 rushing yards in the first half, according to the official game report.
At halftime, Indiana looked firmly in control.
That did not last.
Northwestern changed the game after halftime
The Wildcats came out of the locker room with a much more effective offense.
Chiles helped spark the comeback, and Northwestern scored 13 points in the third quarter. His touchdown pass to Griffin Wilde helped close the gap, and the Wildcats entered the fourth quarter with a realistic chance to turn the game around.
Early in the fourth, Northwestern had cut Indiana's lead to 15–13.
Indiana needed an answer, and it came from Lee Beebe Jr.
Beebe Jr. became the difference-maker
Indiana's running-back situation changed during the game when Turbo Richard left with a lower right-leg injury.
Beebe Jr. took over the workload and responded with the biggest rushing performance of the night.
He finished with 24 carries for 203 yards and one touchdown. According to Indiana-focused reporting, the 203 yards were the most by an Indiana running back since Stevie Scott rushed for 204 yards against Virginia in 2018.
With Northwestern threatening, Beebe Jr. helped Indiana put together a crucial scoring drive. He carried the ball repeatedly, including a 39-yard run that moved the Hoosiers inside the Northwestern 10-yard line.
A few plays later, Beebe Jr. finished the drive himself, scoring on a four-yard run to extend Indiana's lead to 22–13 with 9:35 remaining.
Northwestern was not finished.
The Wildcats refused to go away
The Wildcats answered quickly with another touchdown, cutting Indiana's lead to 22–20.
Suddenly, the Hoosiers were facing another tense possession.
Beebe Jr. had another answer.
On the first play of Indiana's next drive, he broke through for a 70-yard run, taking the ball all the way to the Northwestern 5-yard line. Six plays later, Hoover kept the ball and scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 1:56 remaining.
Indiana was back in front 29–20.
Northwestern kept fighting. Jackson Kleather kicked a 42-yard field goal with 58 seconds left, making it a six-point game.
But the Wildcats could not recover the ensuing onside kick, and Indiana was finally able to run out the clock.
The quarterbacks
Hoover completed 19 of 29 passes for about 200 yards and a touchdown. Charlie Becker was one of his main targets, catching seven passes for 98 yards.
Chiles had a strong second half and finished with 22 completions on 29 attempts for 293 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for a touchdown, according to the game report.
The numbers reflected how dramatically the game shifted. Indiana's defense dominated much of the first half, but Northwestern's offense found significantly more room to operate after the break.
What the result means
For Indiana, the biggest takeaway is a successful start to Big Ten play.
The Hoosiers are now 4–0 overall and 1–0 in conference play, and their winning streak has reached 20 games, according to the Associated Press game report carried by CBS Sports.
For Northwestern, the result was a reminder of the challenge ahead in Big Ten play, but the Wildcats also showed plenty of fight. After struggling to generate offense in the first half, they pushed Indiana into the final minutes and had a chance to make the game even closer.
Northwestern entered the matchup unbeaten at 2–0 and nearly erased a 12-point halftime deficit.

Northwestern's next scheduled game is at home against No. 13 Penn State.
Indiana will travel to face Rutgers in its first road game of the season.
